Statement
I am a Brooklyn-based artist who uses photography to wrestle with the strangeness and impossibility of this natural world that surrounds and supports us. I strive to create pictures that are meaningful and beautiful–immersive images that capture a single moment within a broader narrative and tease out the magic of the unsettling.
For me, the best way to share the sensuality and danger I find hidden in the world is to present a single, poignant, urgent moment. I aim to provide enough depth to invite viewers into a world where they can explore the feeling conveyed in the image, while also offering a space where they may arrive at their own conclusions.
Before a shoot, I spend time researching and planning. During the shoot I shift to the role of choreographer for my subjects, be they human, animal, or of the natural world. We experiment together with expressive postures, gestures, handmade props, constructed sets, wardrobe, and lighting, all to create a feeling of heightened reality. The elements may be familiar, but the composed images take on an entirely new, surreal quality.
I continue my exploration with the subject matter during post-production, a process of editing and collaging the images and discovering their meaning. In the end, I hope that the final piece offers the viewer a renewed sense of curiosity in looking at and experiencing the world in all its awesome strangeness.
